Fit to be Tied - Tie Dye Classes
We bring the Tie Dye class fun to you!
My name is Stacey Smith-Bacon and my story is that I started to learn how to tie dye back in 2012, because my friend who is a tie dye expert asked me if I would like to learn. My answer was a resounding “YES!” since I had always been curious about how it was done. My friend and teacher, Susan Montgomery, is an excellent teacher who guided me through each project with patience and expertise. Sooooo, after about 9 years of having what we called “play dates” to tie and dye on a regular basis, I decided to start teaching so I could pass this skill on to other willing participants.
Classes can be at your home in the backyard, the garage, driveway or wherever you might have a space to accommodate
the guests you invited for your tie dye event. I will bring all the supplies so you and your guests have a great time
while making wearable art.
I teach a beginners Tie Dye class that shows students how to tie up an item of clothing or material by teaching three different basic methods of tying using artificial sinew or rubber bands. Once the item is tied, the student(s) will choose to dye their item(s) from a variety of colors. After the class is over, they will take the item home to "set" the dyes over a 24 hour period before rinsing out the item(s). A typical class usually runs about 2 hours.
In this Workshop, students will provide their own item(s) to dye, ranging from tee shirts to canvas bags, or dish towels to aprons. Whatever they would like to have as wearable art or just a large piece of material to hang on the wall, such as a mandala. I will provide the sources of where to shop for the items.

The dyes used in the classes are the most widely used by professional tie-dyers. Once the item has been dyed, it is placed in a Ziploc® bag for 24 hours. If you really want to "bake" in the color, place the bag in the direct sunlight as much as possible before rinsing out the item. Since the dyes are professional, you don’t need to worry about bleeding after the initial washing and drying.
Typically a class lasts approximately 2 hours, give or take a half hour. Usually a student will bring 2 items to dye in the 2-hour class. Depending on the complexity of the tying, will determine the length of time to complete. Some of the simple ties are the swirl and can be done in 10 minutes, but when doing a more complex tie, it could take 20-30 minutes.
Preferably, ages 10 to adult are the ultimate, however, I have taught children as young as six and one of the parent's is there to help.
Typically, JoAnn Fabric stores carry individual tee shirts for purchase, and sometimes offer aprons, canvas bags, canvas sneakers, hats and more. Make sure the items you bring to the class are 100% cotton. I have found cotton tees at Michaels and also some cute clothing items, pillow covers and dish towels at Target. You can also go to Goodwill where they sort all the clothing by color, but you need to check the labels to make sure they’re 100% cotton.
